Throughout the 20th century, members of Poro, a Senufo initiation society, wore small, finely carved face masks as insignia. The masks, known as kpeliye'e, have delicate oval faces with geometric projections on the sides. Raised, carved scarification patterns decorate the smooth, shiny surfaces. The masks are said to be female and honour dead Senufo elders with their grace and beauty. They complement the aggressive Senufo helmet masks, which are also sponsored by fraternal organisations in the region.
