Dogon bronze figure of a knight.
Material: bronze, oxidised patina
Country of origin: Mali.
Dimensions: height 18 cm (7.08 inches), weight 690 g.
A knight and his mount is a common theme in Dogon art. The horse is often depicted with rigid, straight, rigid legs, while the knight, regardless of his position, transcends glory and grandeur. Horses in Mali have always been associated with warlike acts and allied with warriors and military leaders. These figures are associated with Hogon, the spiritual and religious leader of the Dogon, who belongs to the Harou clan, one of the four original lines of the Dogon.
