Reinier de Graaf or Regnier de Graaf - OPERA OMNIA (ALL WORKS) - 1678

FIRST EDITION BOOK ON MEDICINE, ANATOMY, GYNECOLOGY, ANDROLOGY, OBSTETRICS, GENITAL ORGANS, PREGNANCY, by Reinier de Graaf or Regnier de Graaf (1641-1673), a Dutch physician, physiologist and anatomist, specialized in the functioning of the female and male genital organs, reproduction and the birth of the fetus. He discovered and described female ejaculation, and provided probably the first scientifically accurate representations of the mammalian female reproductive anatomy and physiology. He demonstrated with experiments and illustrations the functioning of the pancreas and the digestive system. Graaf's books on the female and male reproductive systems were the most comprehensive and best illustrated of the 17th century. The book is the first French edition and contains all de Graaf's major works and is illustrated with 41 full-page engravings and many larger, fold-out ones, and created by the eminent Dutch engraver Hendrik Bary (1632-1707) on original drawings by Reinier de Graaf himself. This book includes at least 5 Garrison-Morton titles (251, 264, 974, 1209 and 1210) and many others published separately and here all grouped in a single volume for the first time. Original antique binding of the time in very good condition and perfectly working. References; World Cat OCLC n°1226190756; USTC n°6089133; Heirs of Hippocrates 417-418-638; Cushing G 344-G 345; Waller 3669-3670; Norman 923-926; NLM/Krivatsy 4908; Wellcome III, p. 142; Avenir Tchemerzine, Bibliographie d'Éditions Originales et Rares 15-18th century (Paris, Marcel Plee, 1927-33) Reference: 211. This volume "Opera Omnia" includes 8 books published separately by the same author and grouped here in this chronological order: 1)De virorum organis generationi inservientibus. 2)Epistola ad virum clarissimum Lucam Schacht...de partibus genitalibus mulierum. 3)De mulierum organis generationi inservientibus. 4)Partium gentialium defensio. 5)De succi pancreatici natura & usu. 6)De clysteribus. 7)Epistola ad vobiscum Fortunatum Plempium. 8)De usu siphonis in anatomia. De Graaf's position in the history of medicine is unique, his personal contributions include the description of the testicular tubules, the efferent ducts, corpora lutea and female ejaculation. De Graaf may have been the first to understand the reproductive function of the fallopian tube, described the hydrosalpinx, linking its development to female infertility. The mature stage of the ovarian follicle is called the Graafian follicle in his honor. Reinier de Graaf studied medicine in Leuven (1658), Utrecht and Leiden (1663). There his co-students were Jan Swammerdam, Niels Stensen, Ole Borch and Frederik Ruysch, cooperating with professor Franciscus Sylvius, Johannes van Horne and Lucas Schacht. All of them were interested in the organs of procreation and influenced by Rene Descartes' iatrophysical approach. He submitted his doctoral thesis on the pancreas, and in 1665 he went to France where he further experimented on dogs. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Angers with Jean Chapelain as his translator. He experimented on the functioning of the pancreas with the French physician Pierre Michon Bourdelot (1610-1685).
