This finely executed portrait depicts a lady in classical attire, rendered with remarkable realism using the traditional fire-painting technique, in which glass enamels are hand-applied and kiln-fired to permanently fuse the pigment into the glass. The subtle shading of the face, delicate lace details of the dress, and the finely modelled medallion pendant all demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship typical of early-19th-century Dutch ecclesiastical and portrait glasswork. The composition is framed by a circular border of pink and violet glass with hand-painted ornamentation, leaded and mounted for suspension. When backlit, it produces a warm, luminous effect that accentuates the painterly qualities of the piece.
