Sophia Loren, born in Rome in 1934, was one of the queens of cinema and perhaps Italy's last great diva. With her voluptuous body and warm sensuality, she represented the archetype of femininity and the "bosom miracle"; later she was regarded as the timeless ideal of beauty and success. Sophia Loren (born Sofia Villani Scicolone) grew up in Naples in the poorest of circumstances and came to film via photo novels and beauty contests, where she met producer Carlo Ponti in 1953, whom she later married and who produced more than half of her 50 or so films. In the 1950s, the almond-eyed, brunette, broad-chested and busty Loren portrayed spirited and fun-loving women of the people, fisherwomen, pizza bakers ("How Wonderful to Be a Woman"), but also the beautiful, frivolous girl from the poorer neighborhoods who strives for the top and has to deal with crooks ("Too Bad You're a Canaille"). From 1957 ("The Boy on the Dolphin"), Sophia Loren worked in American films, where she was often reduced to the role of the housewife, so she kept acting in Italy, where she became an excellent comedienne and professional actress under the direction of Vittorio de Sica, with whom she made a total of 14 films. De Sica helped her to win the 1961 "Oscar" for best leading actress. This established her real star status, which was consolidated in the 60s. During these years, she appeared in a number of international productions ("Arabesque") as well as in successful Italian comedies, particularly alongside Marcello Mastroianni, whose partner she was in nine films ("Marriage in Italian") and with whom she played one of her greatest roles in Ettore Scola's "A Special Day" in 1977 as a faded housewife during the fascist era. Since the 80s, Sophia Loren has only appeared sporadically in films. An ironic reunion with Mastroianni took place in 1994 in Robert Altman's "Prêt-à-Porter", where the two of them humorously varied the legendary striptease from de Sica's "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" (1963). In 1991 she received the Honorary Oscar, in 1993 the Honorary César, in 1994 the Golden Bear at the Berlinale and in 1998 the Golden Lion in Venice, in each case for her life's work. Her memoirs were published in 1979 and a cookbook of memories in 1999. Long-standing disputes with the Italian tax authorities culminated in a 30-day prison sentence in 1980, which did nothing to diminish her popularity. As Audrey Hepburn's successor, she was a UN ambassador for refugees. The value of her art collection is estimated at 200 million dollars. ---
