The Swiss Re 4/4 II, currently known as the Re 420, is a locomotive that can still be seen nowadays on the Swiss railways. The R represents high speed, the -e represents electric, and the -4/4 represents 4 axles, all 4 of which are powered. These locomotives can achieve a top speed of 140 km/h and are mainly used for passenger services. The Re 4/4 II or Re 420 is one of the Swiss locomotives of which the greatest quantity were built. These were built in the period between 1964 and 1985. A total of 277 were delivered. In the period between 2004-2005 twelve units were sold to the BLS (Re 420 501 - 420 512). Only six locomotives have been decommissioned.
The Re 421 SBB Cargo.
The Re 421 is the successor to the Re 4/4 II that was also called the Re 420. It is a customised (converted) variant of the Re 4/4 II, that has been made suitable for operation on the German rail network. Adjustments were made to their pantographs and associated fittings to make them suitable for the transport of goods to Germany. The SBB has built 26 of these locomotives and they are mainly used for freight transport. The trains can reach 140 km/h, but may only run at 120 km/h on the German railway network. The conversion of the 26 Re 4/4 II locomotives to the type Re 421 was carried out in the period 2002-2004.
