Hans Springinklee and Erhard Schön - God's Creation of the Universe in Six Days - 1516-1521

ANTIQUE WOODCUT FROM A GERMAN BIBLE (1516 circa), engraved by Erhard Schön (circa 1491-1542) after Hans Springinklee (circa 1490-1540) for a Biblia Sacra (Holy Bible) printed by Jacques Sacon in Lyon for the Nuremberg publisher Anton Koberger (1440-1513) heirs, famous for his 1493 "Nuremberg Chronicle" and godfather of Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). PLEASE NOTE: the buyer will also receive a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). This fine woodcut printed on laid paper was created with meticulous detail, great skill and represents "Genesis, God's creation of the universe in six days". The quality of these woodcuts makes Hans Springinklee and Erhard Schön two of the most important German book illustrators between 1515 and 1540. The woodcuts are modeled directly on the originals of the Lucantonio Giunta's Bible of 1511. Latin text on the back. Sheet size: height 362 x width 252 mm or 14.3 by 9.9 inches. TITLE & DESCRIPTION: woodcut showing ""Genesis, God's creation of the universe in six days" and printed around 1516 for a German Bible. Sheet size: height 362 x width 252 mm or 14.3 by 9.9 inches. The woodcut is in good condition, has wide and original margins around text and illustration, few small imperfections as per photo, is richly inked and well engraved, with great contrast and exaltation of the chiaroscuro and contours of the figures. Beautiful detailed engraving drawn with great skill. AUTHOR: Hans Springinklee (circa 1490-1540) was a German artist from Nuremberg, best known for his woodcuts. He was a pupil of Albrecht Dürer. Neudörfer wrote in 1547 that he was famous as a painter and draughtsman and that he lived in Dürer's house in Nuremberg (Neudörfer, p. 144). During the 1510s Springinklee, both as Dürer's assistant and as a designer in his own right, realized printing projects for Emperor Maximilian I, including the monumental 192-panel woodcut the Triumphal Arch. From 1516, Springinklee mainly produced illustrations for the bibles published by Koberger in Nuremberg and Lyons, mostly of Old Testament scenes. Very little of his work is signed, but over 200 woodcuts of varying merit have been attributed to him. He also created over 100 woodcuts for several editions of the 1513 prayerbook "Hortulus Animae". AUTHOR: Erhard Schön (circa 1491-1542) was a German woodcut designer and painter. Schön was born in Nuremberg as the son of painter Max Schön III. He was clearly influenced by the printmaking of Albrecht Dürer and may have contributed a few woodcuts to Dürer's Triumphal Arch (1515) and Theuerdank (1517). Especially Schön's way of modelling and placing figures is clearly derived from Dürer. After the death of Dürer, Schön also produced a woodcut portrait of the artist. He produced prints of various kind for the popular market and established himself as a popularly demanded artist. He produced illustrations for religious books, Lutheran texts, satirical books, and guides to proportion in art. Together with Hans Springinklee, he created fairly high-quality illustrations for the popular prayer book "Hortulus Animae".
