Conjunto de tabaco de madeira com tabaco’ire - Buxo, Laca - 亮聲作 (“made by Ryôsei”) - Japão - Início do século XIX (fase final do período Edo)
A fine boxwooden smoking set 煙草入 (tabako’ire), comprising a tonkotsu (tobacco box), kiseruzutsu 煙管筒 (pipecase), and lacquered ojime 緒締め (drawstring).
The tonkotsu is intricately carved with a roaring tiger on one side and a dragon soaring amidst curling clouds on the other, the eyes inlaid with dark horn. Signed on one side Ryôsei saku 亮聲作 (“made by Ryôsei”) with kakihan. The accompanying lacquer ojime is carved as a double mask, depicting an oni 鬼 on one side and Okame おかめ on the other.
The kiseruzutsu, of senryû-zutsu type, is carved with the figures Ashinaga 足長 and Tenaga 手長 — two mythical companions symbolising cooperation. Ashinaga, with his long legs, stands balanced on Tenaga’s head while carrying a basket, as Tenaga reaches upward to grasp his companion’s robe. Signed Ryôsei 亮聲 to the underside, with the himotoshi cord aperture placed through the basket.
Period: Japan – First half 19th century (Late Edo period)
Dimensions:
Tonkotsu Length 8.6 cm, Width 3.5 cm, Height 7.7 cm; Kiseruzutsu Length 20.7 cm, Width 2.0 cm, Depth 2.7 cm; Ojime Length 2.1 cm, Width 1.9 cm, Depth 1.8 cm
