Descrição fornecida pelo vendedor

Two Yangoru Boiken giant clam shell rings or 'weingga'
Papua New Guinea, East Sepik Province - 20th century

These clam shell rings are called 'wenga' or 'weingga' by the Boiken people.
The defining characteristic is the large hole drilled in the center of the shell disk.
They were traditionally used as currency in bride price payments, for buying pigs, and for other exchanges and are still used today for major payments.
These shells were, and to some extent still are, a significant part of the economic and cultural landscape of Papua New Guinea.

The smaller and more perfect the central hole, the more valuable the ring. The quality of the white, pearly iridescence also indicated higher value.

Larger weingga = 8.5 cm
Smaller and shiny weingga = 7 cm
Combined weight = 100 g

In good condition. Normal traces of age and use.
For a good impression, please watch all photos carefully.

Insured shipping.
Can also be collected in Ghent, Belgium.
