England, 19th century.
Made of mahogany with brass thread.
Blown glass bottles with silver caps.
It features several hidden compartments.
Condition as shown in pictures.
The overnight case was a very refined and strictly personal object. It was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, when travel was very uncomfortable and long.
It contained a number of different objects. A mirror was always inside the lid, sometimes accompanied by two small candlesticks. The small compartments held jars with lids containing creams, cosmetic powders or soaps, small bottles with (sometimes airtight) caps for ointments and perfumes, clothes and hair brushes and combs. The caps and lids were made of silver.
Hidden compartments were also included, to store coins and jewellery.
