Top Collectibles to Look Out For

As time goes by, what's "in" and "out" goes, well, "in and out" quicker than before. But, the more things change the more they stay the same; applicable in life and trends and also in collectibles. The kind of items people want in their homes don't change much. Prices fluctuate depending on the condition, age, demand and availability of a certain object. New collectibles also circulate and fall into favour each year, but in general there are staple items that stay of consistent demand. Based on research, here's a list of top collectibles to keep your eyes out for that are also on Catawiki!

Depression Glass

Depression glass was made from the turn of the 20th century through the 1940's by numerous manufacturers. It  was originally used as a marketing tool: "five and dime" stores, powdered-soap producers and other dry-goods companies gave it to customers as an incentive to shop in their stores or buy their products. The glass comes in a wide variety of colours (the most popular being green, pink, yellow, and amber) and intricate patterns. There are dozens of special antique glass and crystal pieces in our auctions here, like these colourful additions to your table set.

Small oil paintings

Miniature paintings are increasingly popular in antiques shops and design stores. Store owners say that pieces that were relatively inexpensive several years ago have increased to noticeably higher prices in the last several years. Moderately-sized living spaces have also become more appealing, bringing on an even greater interest in smaller pieces of traditional art. Both of the oil paintings on canvas below are available on Catawiki here.

Vintage jewellery

As an element of fashion, jewellery trends come and go depending on the style of the times. Inexpensive costume jewellery has always been a friend to the fashion-conscious, but now the value is great, along with finer vintage accessories as well. Both of these pieces of antique jewellery are in our auctions here

Rock & Pop Memorabilia

Iconic stars such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, David Bowie, and Prince, who laid foundations and set trends for music in the future, are fading fast due to an icreased amount of celebrities made in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Memorabilia from these decades is increasing in value every day and is a great place for a new collector to start and get instant return. Catawiki's record auction is a great place to find records, posters, and other collectibles from your favourite bands and celebrities. We also have themed auctions featuring The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Prince, David Bowie, and rock/pop memorabilia in general fairly regularly! Keep updated on our themed auctions page here.

Chinese and Japanese Ceramics

The Chinese economy was booming until recently, which got lots of people buying back their heritage. Part of the reason Chinese ceramics are such a good find is that once they are acquired by Chinese buyers, it's not likely they'll be up on the auction blocks again. However, that might change with the destabilizing economy. Japanese ceramics and works of art from the Meiji era (late 19th and early 20th centuries) are heightening in popularity, much in terms of plates, vases, and statues. Check out our Asian Art & Objects auction here to find these Chinese porcelain dishes below and other special oriental items.

Mid-Century Modern Furniture

Due to TV phenomenon Mad Men, mid-century modern furniture and design is making its comeback, appearing in our auctions on a weekly basis. Minus the dreadful shaggy carpet of the 70's, items from the '50's, 60's and 70's champion the idea of chic yet livable style. They also give a decorative element of the past without feeling too dated for the future, providing unique versatility in a variety of homes. Visit our design auctions for mid-century modern decor, including pieces like this chair from the 60's available here
