In our Expert’s Choice feature, one of our experts shares their favourite items currently in auction. This week our Comics expert, Jacques Pels, selects several exceptional items from our comics auctions for you to enjoy.

1. Kuifje/Tintin – “Le Crabe aux pinces d'or” - Bulgarian version -Hardback - First edition - (1993)

Did you know Tintin is published in more than 90 languages? Some countries, however, only translated a few of Tintin’s albums. In Bulgaria, they released just one album back in 1993. The editor Casterman was was not pleased with the printing quality of the comic, so they renounced the contract with Bulgaria. Few copies were made when this album was published, so it’s quite unlikely you’ve seen this Bulgarian edition before. Now you can find a copy of this extremely rare album in this week’s Hergé/Tintin Auction!

2. Trigië 14 – “The Fiendish Experiment/De Gestolen Formule” - Original page in colour (page 14) - (1972)

When you look at this beautifully detailed artwork by Don Lawrence, it almost seems a shame to put in the speech balloons. The original fourteenth page of “The Fiendish Experiment” is an extraordinary work of art and shows Lawrence’s unique style. You’ll find this original page, and many more, in this week’s Original Comic Art Auction.

3. Gil Jourdan 4 – “Les Cargos du crepuscule” - First edition – French - (1961)

Gil Jourdan is one of the greatest classics from the Marcinelle School. Cartoonists that used this typical caricatural style, usually draw characters with big noses and often convey the impression of movement. Maurice Tillieux, the creator of Gil Jourdan, is known for his effective drawing style and for building ingenious scenarios where mystery meets humour. His fourth album, “Les Cargos du crépuscule” is a true masterpiece! In this week’s French Comic Auction is a first edition of this album from 1961.

4. Spirou et Fantasio – “Spirou Mecanica” - EO – French - (1994)

In this week's Comic Auction (Curiosities) is this rare portfolio from André Franquin. It is edited by Champaka and includes eight silk screens from Spirou et Fantasio. Each screen represents an iconic car scene from this popular series that was created in the ’50s and ’60s. Only 275 copies of these beautiful pieces were made for the French Market in 1994.

5. Isabelle Avondrood - Complete series (1-10) - Hardcover – Dutch - (1976/2017)

The complete hardcover series of Isabelle Avondrood (Adèle Blanc-Sec) by French artist Jacques Tardi can now be found in this week’s Dutch Comic Auction. The storyline of this series is set in the early 20th century, in Paris, where the heroine encounters supernatural events. This is a great opportunity to acquire the entire series in a luxurious edition.
