On offer is a set of six blown shot glasses designed by Tapio Wirkkala for IITTALA (Finland). The glasses are superbly crafted pieces made of thick, transparent, textured art glass that imitates the rugged shape and feel of nature. Tapio Wirkkala was inspired by the powerful shapes of natural phenomena such as the bark of trees and melting ice of his Finnish surroundings. These glasses, from the 1970s, display intricate detailed lines of vertical ridges and irregular surfaces and are clearly in the Scandinavian/Nordic aesthetic, with their minimalist, elegant design. The glass set is a testament to Wirkkala’s unparalleled ability to design functional/utilitarian pieces that are exquisitely artistic, organic and nature-inspired. These glasses are highly sought after pieces. MEASUREMENTS: The glasses are approximately 6.5 cm high and 5 cm in diameter. CONDITION: The glasses are clear and clean without scratches, cracks or chips. There are some very small signs of use. The glass set has its original box/packaging. MAKER’S MARKS: The designer’s initials — TW — are etched on the underside. TRANSPORT: The set will be very carefully wrapped and boxed, and shipped with a tracking code. TAPIO WIRKKALA (1915-1985) was one Finland’s leading artists and designers of the 20th century. He was part of the Nordic design tradition aiming for clarity in shape that was timeless, organic, and as ‘cool’ as Scandinavian nature. He studied at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki and worked for many decades for Iittala, Rosenthal and Murano — among others.
