This Japanese tea ceremony natsume features the iconic Kōdai-ji style maki-e lacquerware design. It is presented with its original crackle-patterned paper box and a dedicated storage cloth.
Crafted with a wooden body and finished in double-coated black lacquer (nido-nuri), the surface is jet-black, mirror-like, and uniformly lustrous. Using the traditional Japanese maki-e technique, artisans decorated the piece with delicate, vivid patterns primarily in gold powder, accented by subtle touches of red lacquer — a classic expression of Japanese lacquer art.
The entire natsume is themed around autumn grasses, capturing the natural charm of a wild autumn landscape — a quintessential subject of the Kōdai-ji aesthetic.
The body and lid are adorned with pampas grass, bellflowers, chrysanthemums, and grape vines. The flowing, graceful lines are defined in gold maki-e, with select flower centers and fruits highlighted in red lacquer, creating an elegant contrast against the deep black background.
Using the Japanese “full-coverage painting” style, the motifs extend seamlessly from the body to the lid, forming a cohesive and harmonious composition that embodies the Japanese philosophy of bringing nature into everyday objects.
Due to its age, the natsume and tomobako show natural aging and minor wear. The lacquer finish is fully intact, with no cracks or peeling. Overall condition is good for its age.
