A Taino Limestone Ceremonial Axe (Hacha), Dominican Republic, 10th to 15th Century A.D.
Impressive carved limestone ceremonial hacha featuring a powerful anthropomorphic figure in profile. The piece displays a large stylized head with incised facial features, open mouth, detailed headdress, and prominent ear elements. The cross-shaped blade and solid handle show fine incised geometric motifs. The light beige limestone has a beautiful natural patina with darker mineral deposits that accentuate the carving.
Ceremonial hachas of this quality were prestigious ritual objects used by Taíno caciques and elites in the Dominican Republic, symbolizing authority, ancestral power, and spiritual protection.
Length: 22.5 cm
Provenance:
German private collection, acquired in Germany in the 1980s.
