Item Description:
山田和 Yamada Kazu(1954- )
An exquisite Shino-ware sake cup (guinomi) by Yamada Kazu, one of the most accomplished ceramic artists working in the Momoyama-revival tradition of Mino ware.
This piece is a superb example of the artist's mastery of Shino glaze — the celebrated white long-stone glaze of Mino — rendered with exceptional depth and warmth.
The cup displays a generously rounded form with a slightly inward-tapering rim, its surface animated by the distinctive "adze-mark" texture (chōna-me) — bold, rhythmic facets carved into the clay body before firing.
This technique lends the exterior a powerful, sculptural vitality reminiscent of Momoyama-period tea wares, while the thick Shino glaze settles into the recesses to create subtle tonal variation between milky white and warm amber.
The interior is glazed in the same rich Shino white, smooth and luminous.
The foot ring (kōdai) is trimmed with precision, exposing the warm sandy clay body beneath.
Presented with original wooden storage box (tomobako), silk storage cloth (tomobukuro), and accompanying booklet (shiori).

Artist Profile
山田和 Yamada Kazu(1954- )
Yamada Kazu (born 1954) is a highly regarded contemporary ceramic artist born in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, into a distinguished dynasty of Japanese ceramicists. His grandfather was the 2nd-generation Yamada Jozan, his father Yamada Kenkichi was an acclaimed Tokoname ware artist exhibited at the Nitten, and his uncle was the 3rd-generation Yamada Jozan — a Living National Treasure of Tokoname ware.
After graduating from Osaka University of Arts (ceramics course) in 1976, Yamada established his kiln and went on to study under the legendary master Kato Tokuro (1897–1985) — one of the towering figures of 20th-century Japanese ceramics, celebrated for his profound research into and revival of Momoyama-period Shino, Oribe, and Yellow Seto wares. Under Tokuro's guidance, Yamada devoted himself to Shino as his primary medium, later expanding to Aka-yu Oribe and Ao-Oribe. His work has entered major international museum collections, a testament to his standing as one of the foremost Shino artists of his generation.
