*In the Street* is a photo book by Helen Levitt, one of the few photographers to have studied under Walker Evans and received his endorsement. Levitt studied under Evans primarily throughout the 1930s, later working for publications such as *Time* and *Fortune*, and held a solo exhibition at MoMA in 1943. For Levitt, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, her primary subject was the streets of New York—particularly the impoverished neighborhoods symbolized by places like Harlem. Her street snapshots, which captured the neighborhoods and people that most photographers of the time turned away from with a warm, affectionate gaze, were compiled into the 1965 photo book *A Way of Seeing*, which has since become a classic, reprinted many times. This book is a collection of works by Levitt, who continued to observe those streets, focusing on the “graffiti” left behind by children. It is a wonderful volume filled with love and messages, reminiscent of Brassai’s masterpiece *Graffiti de Brassai*.
