He was known especially for his exceptional speed, his game vision, and his ability to regularly produce many points as a defenseman. Coffey played 21 seasons in the NHL and accumulated over 1,500 career points — an extraordinary achievement for a defenseman.
During his career he played for the Edmonton Oilers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Los Angeles Kings, the Detroit Red Wings, the Hartford Whalers, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Carolina Hurricanes. His greatest successes came with the Edmonton Oilers alongside Wayne Gretzky, with whom he won the Stanley Cup four times. He won another Stanley Cup title in 1991 with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
