A refined Japanese stoneware dish (hachi) covered in a striking kuro-yu (black iron glaze), presented in its original wooden box inscribed with the title and the artist's signature and seal.

The piece takes the form of a shallow, wide-rimmed circular dish — a classic Japanese hachi form — executed with quiet mastery on the wheel.

The glaze is the true subject of this work.

A deep, matte-to-satin black dominates the surface, while a dramatic wash of luminous blue-grey and warm russet iron-red blooms across the lower interior, creating a landscape-like effect that evokes moonlit water or volcanic terrain.

The irregular pooling of the glaze — blue drifting into copper-rose, freckled with iron spotting — is characteristic of high-temperature reduction firing, in which atmospheric conditions within the kiln draw out colours that cannot be predicted or fully controlled, making each piece unique.

The exterior carries a similar matte black, with subtler warm brown undertones where the glaze thins toward the foot.

The unglazed foot ring reveals the dark, iron-rich stoneware body beneath.

A small maker's seal is impressed on the underside.

This dish is versatile in function — ideal as a display piece, a fruit or sweet plate, or a serving dish for dark-themed table settings — and its dramatic glaze work will command attention in any context.
