Comment of the appraiser:
The quadruped is a Moorish horse “of Berber breed, with a grey coat, named River horse”, it is the only breed to have acclimatised to the harsh environment of the Sudanese savannah, and especially for having resisted against trypanosomiasis.
While some specialists date the introduction of horses back to a more distant past, the Arab erudites consider that the great medieval empires of west Africa, extending from Mali to Songhai at the early 15th century, have succeeded in their territorial expansion on horseback.
Furthermore, the presence of this animal is evidenced in the region of the inner Niger Delta around the 13th century, as can attest an equestrian statue in terracotta found in Djenné which dates back to that period.
The Djennenké, who migrated on the Bandiagara plateau around 1475, are probably at the origin of the adoption of this kind of transportation mode by the Dogon natives. Since then, the horse inspired the sculptors of the escarpment, they engrave its image in all sorts of materials, at different times, in a great variety of styles and on a wide range of supports.
The animal is considered as an incarnation of Nommo, son of god, who was sacrificed and resurrected, and who arrived on Earth in an ark (aduno koro) accompanied by the eight primordial ancestors of humanity. The horse is often represented with his rider, the Hogon , “a great natural priest of ancestral spirits [...]
Formerly, his power was absolute, like for any great political, legal and religious leader”. Please note that the Hogon is the rider represented on the lid of the cup analysed here, and is also its exclusive user, including in ceremonies of food sharing.
