An exquisite embroidery of a crane flying through the clouds, the sun in the background, over a pen and scroll motif. The symbolism of a flying crane is that of the desire for social advancement, while the pen and scroll represent the tools of a scholar. It it therefore not unreasonable to assume the the panel was intended to celebrate scholarly advancement or promotion. The crane was also the emblem of a civil official of the first rank.
