The continuous profile by Renato Giuseppe Bertelli is an iconic work that represented a symbol of the fascist regime in the 1930s. The sculpture has a cylindrical structure shaped with alternating reliefs and engravings. The left and right edges depict a very simplified human profile. Benito Mussolini's profile is well recognizable because Guido Bertelli identified and simplified the characteristic features of the Duce's face. The head is shaved, the nose is pronounced and the jaw is prominent and squared. The physiognomic traits of Benito Mussolini's profile are simplified and idealized. Thanks to this aesthetic operation, Bertelli created a very powerful iconic portrait. The work was widely distributed and became a true propaganda icon. The sculpture offers the viewer a double portrait of the Duce, Benito Mussolini. In this way, Renato Guido Bertelli referred to the classical myth of Janus Bifrons. Symbolically, the Continuous Profile represents the Duce's constant and attentive watch over every citizen.
