About the Work:
Τα Ελεγεία της Οξώπετρας (The Oxopetra Elegies) represents one of Odysseas Elytis’s final poetic works, a luminous meditation on time, light, and the metaphysical nature of existence. Written at the height of his poetic maturity, this collection fuses modernist symbolism and classical Greek lyricism, offering a deeply introspective tone enriched by spiritual and aesthetic depth.
Published by Ikaros in 1991, this first edition, first printing is especially sought after for its uncut pages, frontispiece by Kostas Paniaras, and cover design by Ioulita Iliopoulou, the poet’s lifelong partner and muse.
A rare and collectible volume, it stands as a beautiful example of Greek literary and artistic collaboration.
About the Author:
Odysseas Elytis (pen name of Odysseas Alepoudellis, 1911–1996) was one of the most important figures of 20th-century Greek literature. A leading representative of Romantic Modernism, Elytis’s poetry celebrates light, freedom, and the Aegean landscape, combining surrealist imagery with national and spiritual themes.
He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1979, with his masterpiece Άξιον Εστί (Axion Esti) hailed as a cornerstone of modern Greek poetry. Other key works include Ο Ήλιος ο Ηλιάτορας (The Sovereign Sun) and Τα Ρω του Έρωτα (The Trills of Love).
