Title 【Edo Period】Complete Nashiji (Gold Sprinkled) Makie Suzuribako with Figurative Motif (Including Inkstone, Water Dropper, and Antique Ink Stick) — A Masterpiece of Edo-Era Elegance, Reflecting the Refined Aesthetics of the Literati — This is an exquisite Edo-period (late 19th century) lacquered writing box (suzuribako) finished entirely in nashiji (gold-sprinkled ground) and adorned with an elegant makie (gold lacquer) depiction of human figures. The lavish application of gold dust across the entire surface and the refined composition embody the sophistication of the Japanese literati class who once cherished such fine writing instruments. Inside the box remain an inkstone (suzuri), a water dropper (suiteki), and an antique ink stick (koboku). The ink stick, titled “Wakan Sho-fu” (和漢書譜), is attributed to Gozen Taiemon of Nishio-mae, Kumaki-chō, and is believed to date from the late Edo to early Meiji period. Although the ink stick is broken in half, it serves not as a functional item but as an authentic historical reference that supports the provenance and period of the suzuribako. Dimensions Approx. 23.5 cm (H) × 21 cm (W) × 5cm (D) Condition Considering its age, the piece remains in good antique condition. There are minor chips and wear along the edges of the box, consistent with age and use. The makie and nashiji still retain a brilliant, elegant luster, revealing the depth and warmth unique to centuries-old Japanese lacquerware. Please examine the photos carefully for an accurate assessment of condition. — A rare surviving example of Edo-period artistry, this suzuribako beautifully preserves the essence of Japan’s literati culture and refined lacquer craftsmanship. It is a true museum-quality antique, combining both artistic beauty and historical significance. We will use Japan Post or for shipping.
