Natural-history context
The pied avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) is one of Europe’s most distinctive waders, known for its sweeping, upturned bill used to skim through shallow water for crustaceans and insects. After almost disappearing from parts of Western Europe in the 19th century, it became a symbol of successful conservation when breeding colonies returned in the mid-20th century — especially along the Dutch Wadden Sea. Its striking pied pattern and delicate foraging behavior have made it an emblematic species of tidal marshes and saline lagoons.
