In the tea ceremony, this is a container used to serve the main sweets, and is designed to hold as many as the number of guests invited. It comes in a variety of shapes, including round, square, and stackable, with a lid. A pair of black-lettered chopsticks is also served with the container for guests to use. In Japan, stackable boxes called kasane sutra boxes have been used since the Heian period. From there, stacked boxes were born as household items, and food baskets developed as decorative shelves. In fact, in the Muromachi period "Kindai Kanso Choki" and other books, it is written that food baskets were used as shelf decorations in shoin (study rooms). In later years, as the tea ceremony developed, food baskets became popular among tea masters, and it is believed that food baskets came to be used as containers for the main sweets.
