The 5 Most Expensive Yachts in the World

When you find yourself with a relatively large sum of money it is hard to avoid spoiling yourself a little, right? Well some people take this little habit to the next level. A yacht, for example, is considered as one of the most luxurious items a person can own, a symbol of wealth and prosperity, therefore we've compiled a list of the top 5 most expensive and extravagant yachts in the world.

5. Dubai - €330.5 million
Currently this Dubai yacht is owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of the Emirate of Dubai, but originally it was a joint project between Blohm + Voss and Lurssen shipyards for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei. The boat launched in 2006, more than 10 years after the project was initially planned, and is currently the third largest yacht in the world - 162 metres long and fits more than 115 guests.

The most luxurious features of the vessel are sunbathing areas, jacuzzis and a swimming pool with handmade tiling. The main interior designer was Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum himself. The intricate and bold interior of the Dubai features handmade mosaics and a circular staircase with glass steps that change colour. The enormous deck of the boat consists of a split-lever owner’s deck, a lounge, a spacious social area and plenty of VIP and guest suites. Of course, the Dubai also features a helipad, which can withhold a helicopter of up to 9,5 tons. Now that’s one luxurious ride.

4. Azzam - €613.7 million

Another luxurious liner owned by a UAE royalty - the Azzam, owned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nayan, President of the UAE and Emir of Abu Dhabi. Built by Lürssen Yachts, this vessel is rumoured to be “the most complex and challenging yacht that has ever been built”. However, the most impressive feature of the yacht is not its price tag, nor extravagant interior, it’s its size. With its length of 180m, the Azzam proudly takes the first place as the largest private yacht in the world.  Moreover, this superyacht is not only enormous, but also quite fast,  reaching speeds of more than 35mph (30 knots).

The designer responsible for the interior of the Azzam is Christophe Leoni, who describes it as “sophisticated and luxurious in a turn of the century Empire style”.

3. Streets of Monaco - €1.03 billion

As the name hints, this floating extravagance project will be designed to replicate the city of Monaco, or to be more precise, a section of Monte Carlo. This vessel will be built by Yacht Island Design of Derbyshire County in England and is expected to reach a price over €1.03 Billion. The price will go this high due to its unconventional design, which will feature scaled-down replicas of famous landmarks from Monaco, such as the Monte Carlo Casino, racetrack, Hotel de Paris, La Rascasse, Loews Hotes and Cafe de Paris. Moreover, the Streets of Monaco boasts swimming pools, tennis courts, a cafè-bar with underwater sights, a mini waterfall, helicopters and a submarine. The centrepiece of the ship will be the Atrium, where seven guest suites are located, alongside with the 3-floor penthouse apartment of the future billionaire owner of the Streets of Monaco. This leaves us guessing who will be the billionaire who will invest in this extravagant project.

2. Eclipse - €425 million to €1.1 billion

Taking the second place after the Azzam as the largest private yacht in the world, the Eclipse belongs to one of the richest people of the world, russian businessman Roman Abramovich. This luxury motor yacht is 162.5 metres long and was constructed by Blohm + Voss. The exact price of the floating gem is unknown and the estimations are based on the extravagant features the ship has. They include two helipads, a submarine, 24 guest cabins, two swimming pools, hot tubs and a disco hall. What makes this ship special is its security system. The Eclipse is equipped with a missile defence system, intruder detection systems and even an anti-paparazzi system, which prevents them from taking pictures with light shining directly into their camera lenses. The humble number of 70 crew members is required to maintain the ship. It seems like Mr. Abramovich is a little overprotective.

1. Hoax History Supreme - €4.2 billion

The time has come to introduce the yacht of all yachts, the one and only - Hoax History Supreme. The price tag of this luxurious vessel is more that the previous 4 combined and it’s not without reason. This piece of floating jewellery was designed by UK designer Stuart Hughes and it took over 3 years to complete the project.

Let’s take a look at what makes this yacht so unbelievably pricey! To begin with, this liner is assembled with nothing other than solid gold and platinum, and to be more precise, 100,000 kg of them! A thin layer of gold coats base of the ship, the deck, rails, staircases, dining area and even the anchor! The hidden piece of art in this luxury boat is the master bedroom, which features a wall piece from meteorites, a statue made out of T-Rex bones, a 68 kg 24K gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium and a liquor bottle featuring an 18.5 ct diamond, which costs 42 million! Displaying wealth is one thing, but this yacht represents a whole other level of what we call 'being rich'.

It all seems a little over the top, doesn't it? Well, that's because it is! A few weeks, or even days, after the news about this yacht broke and its price tag outraged many people, it turned out that the whole thing was a hoax. After all, do you really believe that a boat this big with 100,000kg of solid gold would actually float?
