Bruichladdich 1973 40.2% - 30 year single malt aged 65% in American Oak & 35% Refill in Sherry Hogshead. Barreled in 1973 and bottled 2003 in Islay. This bottle comes in the original metal canister in near mint condition; there are a few rubs in the finish and a mild indentation. Included is the original 2003 Cask Offer booklet and the series catalog listing other long barreled editions in mint yet curled to the shape of the container condition. This is a sealed, never opened bottle, and still has the foil cap in mint condition (see photo). There is no fill code as it is not a requirement in the USA. I purchased 2 bottles in 2012 in NYC. One is here and has traveled with me, the other long since enjoyed. This is bottle 1462 of 4200 and there are maybe under 10 bottles left globally.

This opens as leathery, earth, cinnamon, toffee and left to breath yields to fruits, soft notes on the nose. Taste is lightly peaty but not medicinal, pepper, herbaceous, tannic tea, tree fruit, salty, Islay distinctive. There is alot of complexity here. The 40.2% is lighter on the punch given its lower ABV but finishes nicely and is enjoyable albeit a little short. This is nowhere near their newer peat monster generation of releases but still has that distinct Laddie mark and flavor. This may have been overshadowed by their 1970 but it is not a dram to be laughed at...
