Understanding US sales tax

Sales tax for orders shipped to the United States

If your object is shipped to the United States, you may need to pay U.S. sales or use tax. This is separate from any import duties or customs charges.

Sales tax in the U.S. isn’t set at the federal level. Whether tax applies, and how much, depends on the delivery address and the type of object you’ve ordered.

How U.S. sales tax works

Under marketplace facilitator laws, we’re required to collect and remit sales or use tax in most U.S. states. When this applies, the tax is automatically added at checkout and paid to the relevant tax authority.

States where Catawiki will apply sales tax:

  • California
  • New York
  • Florida
  • New Jersey
  • Illinois
  • Washington
  • Georgia
  • Michigan
  • Virginia

If sales tax isn’t added at checkout, you may still need to report and pay use tax to your state after receiving the object.

Tax rules vary by state, including whether shipping costs are taxable.

What this means for you

  • Sales tax is based on the delivery address, not the billing address.
  • The same object may be taxed differently depending on where it’s shipped.
  • If no sales tax is charged at checkout, we recommend keeping your order confirmation and checking your state’s tax rules.

Note for sellers

If you sell to buyers in the U.S., you may still have your own tax obligations. These can include income tax, state-level filings, or checking if you’ve met a state’s economic nexus threshold – even in states where we collect and remit sales tax on your behalf.
