No. 96786868

Scientific Name: Mawsonia sp. (Prehistoric Coelacanth)
Location: Kem Kem Valley, Morocco
Stage: Lower-Middle Cretaceous (approximately 110-95 million years ago)
Size: 18.8 cm
Description of the fossil:
We present a partial fossil skull of a prehistoric coelacanth, originating from the Kem Kem Valley in Morocco. This specimen, measuring 18.8 cm, belongs to the genus Mawsonia, one of the largest coelacanths that have existed, reaching lengths of up to 6 meters.
Coelacanths are considered living fossils, having changed very little in over 400 million years. Unlike modern coelacanths (Latimeria), Mawsonia inhabited freshwater and coastal waters, rather than deep environments. Its strong jaw and unique bony structure make it an exceptional specimen for paleontology.
