In our Expert’s Choice feature, one of our in-house experts shares their favourite items in auction. This week our photography expert, Daniel Heikens, selects three photographs from our Summer Edition Photography auction (6th-22nd July) that you don’t want to miss.

1. Hendrik Kerstens (1956-), 'Bag', 2007
UltraChrome print, signed and stamped on certificate, edition; Artist Proof 1/2, size: 62.5 x 50 cm.
Provenance: Artist proof from the ‘Kerstensatelier’ Amsterdam, to private collection

Hendrik Kerstens combines his personal life, photography and the long tradition of Dutch painters in this iconic portrait of his daughter Paula in 2007. The plastic bag refers to the hand out of plastic bags in shops and creates an ecological statement. The way the bag is worn reminds us of the way women wore their headdresses in the 17th century. In 2008 this photograph won the second prize at the National Portrait Gallery in London with the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2008.
Hendrik Kerstens work can be found in the collections of; 'The Sir Elton John Photography Collection, London, UK', the MoPa Museum of Photographic Art, San Diego, USA and the Museum of Photography in The Hague, NL amongst others.
2. Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946), Spring Showers-The Street Cleaner, New York, 1900 Hand-pulled, large photogravure on Japan vellum, printed in ca 1903/1904 image size: 30 x 12.5 cm
Provenance: Amy Wolf Fine Art, New York to private collection
In 1911 this particular image was published by Alfred Stieglitz in one of his 'Camera Work' publications amongst others - although in a smaller size.
This photogravure is so special because of its bigger size and rarity and because it was pulled in ca 1903/1904, 7 to 8 years before the 'Camera Work' publication.
Stieglitz's work can be found in the photography collections of; the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, the Getty Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum amongst many others.
3. Ansel Adams (1902-1984) - Winter Sunrise, Sierra Nevada from Lone Pine, 1944Gelatin-silver print, signed, image size: 40 x 48 cm.
Provenance: Carl Siembab Gallery, Boston, acquired 1968 to George Gund III Trust, san Francisco, CA. to private collection
It took Ansel Adams 5 days to take this specific
photograph. He had just made a new set-up on the roof of his car on which to place his big camera. When all factors he had waited for came together, he shot the image he was looking for. Many years later he said; “Sometimes I do get to places just when God's ready to have somebody click the shutter.” (Source: 'The Ansel Adams Gallery')
Ansel Adams is one of the most important photographers in American history. His photographs are found in the collections of many important American Museums. Amongst them are the International Center of Photography in New York, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa), and the MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art).
