Basalt Sculpture Anubis - Egyptian God - early 20th century
A god of the dead in the shape of a dog or a jackal. The jackal was an animal from the western desert and was therefore associated with the underworld in the west. Later, the worship of Anubis was linked to that of Osiris and Anubis was recognised as the son of Osiris and Nephthys.
Anubis embalmed the body of Osiris and led the funeral rites for him. In the book of the dead, Anubis is the god who oversees embalming and mummification (he supposedly invented mummification), and is present when opening the mouth and during the weighing of the heart. He is the guide of the dead through the underworld.
The sculpture is approx. 48 cm tall.
Weighs approx. 4.1 kg.
