This watch is considered the bourgeois version of the watches that Jaeger LeCoultre delivered to the British RAF during the war (WW2). The calibre P478 was introduced in 1945, the same year as the watch. This calibre is often considered the most advanced manual movement of Jaeger LeCoultre. This 478 is almost identical to the 479 in MARK X watches used by the British RAF, the difference is that the 478 has a central second hand.
