Jan de Boer (1877-1946) - Herfst stilte
The oil painting has a depiction of mushrooms in a forest and is titled ‘Herfst stilte’. It is probably from the period 1940-1946.
The painting is made by Jan Adriaan de Boer, born in 1877 in Harlingen and passed away in 1946 in Hoorn. He was an earthenware painter and decorative painter who was mainly an autodidact. He painted and drew many still lifes and landscapes, amongst others, forest scenes with mushrooms. He really became renowned for his deep sea flora with lots of symbolism. His work is extra special because underwater photography wasn’t available yet on those days, his work was more a type of science fiction (also see schilderjandeboer.nl).
Jan de Boer received the large silver medal for art and science in 1937 on his sixtieth birthday, handed to him by Queen Wilhelmina. Next to that, he was an officer of the l'Academie des Beaux Arts. Jan de Boer served in several official functions during his life. He served on the board of Arti et Amicitiae He was chairman of the Rembrandt Society.
On the facade of his house at the Westerdokdijk number 50 in Amsterdam, the Latin text 'Medequaverdi' had a prominent presence, that he explained laughing as ‘Earned with the brush’. This address is also mentioned on the verso of the painting ‘Herfst stilte’.
The painting can be delivered (depending on location) or picked-up. Shipping is of course also possible.
