Willcox & Gibbs hand-operated portable sewing machine, metal / paint, made by Brown and Sharpe, Providence, Rhode Island, for Willcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Company, New York, New York, USA, 1884 The sewing machine has a cast iron mechanism that has been Japanned black. The sewing machine head is in the form of an open ring forming the letter 'G'. Gilt transfers of stylised leaves and flowers have been applied to the base and sides.
