Allemagne - Chronomètre sous-marin de la marine impériale! Spécialement conçu pour le sous-marin, très rare !! - Chronomètre de navire Imperial Navy. Chronomètre werke GmbH. Hambourg - 1915
A Ship Chronometer from WW1.
It was created by Chronometer Werke GmbH. Hamburg, the later Wempe in 1915.
It has the following markings:
Work number 836 which is on various parts of the movement and clockwork housing, the entire movement is matching numbers.
Furthermore, on the bottom of the enclosure there is the imperial crown and the Navy inventory number 470 U.
470 is a running number of the Navy and was issued at the yard when the boat was set up, the U is for U-boat.
The Chronometer was therefore for a U-boat, which is apparent from the U behind the inventory number, but also from the "Weicheisenausstattung" which is in the lower housing of the chronometer to protect it from the magnetic fields of the E-engine.
It also has a Palladium Balance spring, these were non-magnetic and especially for use in U-boats
This is not only a rare Chronometer from the pre-Wempe era, but also very rare because it is one of the very few U-boat Chronos from WW1.
It is probably later reused because the housing is of a slightly later model (ww2), this one is a Wempe model.
There are two keys:
one to wind it and one to set the hands (do not do this by hand!!) The original wind-up key is not in the pictures, it is delivered with the clock, the seller forgot to send it and it is now on its way.
The key to adjust the hands is in the clamp in the lid.
Original key delivered, see last three photos.
