Bencharong ware is a porcelain made in Jingdezhen, first commissioned by the Thai kings in the 18th / 19th century. Two glazes and two or three firings were required to make a piece, so it was expensive and complicated to produce.
Decorated with 'thepanom' and 'norasingh', Buddhist deities, typically the 'thepanom' sit cross-legged in a praying posture and the 'norasingh', believed to reside in the mythical Himaphan forest, bellow the Buddhist heavens, has a human head, the hindquarters of a lion with a flame-tipped tail.
Mid to late 18th century.
Old repair but good.
