★ Yes – Fragile
Yes' 1971 album "Fragile" is a milestone in the history of progressive rock.
With this album, keyboardist Tony Kaye left the band and Rick Wakeman joined.
Wakeman's keyboard work, especially on the Moog synthesizer, became a defining element of the album.
The album is known for its complex compositions that combine elements of rock, classical music and jazz.
Each member of the band contributed to the songwriting, resulting in a diverse range of styles and sounds.
"Fragile" contains some of Yes' best-known tracks, including "Roundabout" and "Long Distance Runaround".
These songs became hits and are still celebrated by progressive rock fans.
The album features instrumental showcases for each band member, highlighting their virtuosity and musicianship.
Tracks such as "Cans and Brahms" (based on Brahms' Symphony No. 4) and "The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)" are examples of this aspect of the album.
The album's iconic cover, designed by artist Roger Dean, features a distinctive landscape with a floating island and a spaceship.
Dean's artwork has been closely associated with Yes and the entire genre of progressive rock.
Overall, "Fragile" is widely regarded as one of Yes' best albums and a classic of the progressive rock genre.
The innovative music and sophisticated compositions continue to captivate listeners more than five years later.
