Dom Pérignon champagne owes its name to the famous monk and procurator of Hautvillers Abbey in 1668, Pierre Pérignon, known as Dom Pérignon, who, according to legend, developed the first champagne in history. It would be Pierre Pérignon himself, in 1669, who would transmit the technique to Benedictine Thierry Ruinart. Thus, in 1729, Ruinart became the first champagne house. As of 1 January 2019, Vincent Chaperon succeeded Richard Geoffroy as Cellar Master of Dom Pérignon.
2012 was a year in which variable and difficult weather conditions had a major impact on the vineyard. The winter was marked by frost. In spring, there was frost, heavy rain, hailstorms and a sudden drop in temperature during flowering. The hot and dry summer weather, particularly in August, was optimal for the grapes to ripen. The grapes harvested between 10 and 26 September showed a perfect balance of tension, freshness and richness. Despite the low yields, 2012 is an excellent champagne vintage.
