Due to custom regulations we can not ship outside the E.U. Please make sure you have an EU shipping address before bidding. Ancient Roman glass amulet pendant made from molded blue glass. The pendant is topped with a large suspension loop, still intact and well preserved, whilst the reverse is plain and unadorned. The pendant is decorated with a lion advancing to right. Above the lion are sun and moon symbols. The majority of the pendant shows a fantastic silver toned iridescence, the suspension loop has a multicoloured iridescence. The blue glass can best be seen on the reverse side. Such glass pendants would have been worn by Romans to bring good luck and strength in battle and to ward off evil. Length: ± 25,8 mm Width: ± 19,1 mm Condition: good solid condition, complete with suspension loop. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images. Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format). Lions were strongly associated with Hercules as he strangled the Nemean Lion as one of his Twelve Labours. A lion's skin was one of Heracles' attributes. For soldiers in the Roman army, the lion hunt was a favourtie pastime. The Roman Imperial army included 'venatores' (hunters) in their ranks. A crescent (Lunula) was a popular symbol in many ancient cultures. It is associated with Artemis/Diana as a symbol of virginity and female chastity. In Christianity, the Lunula entered Marian iconography. In the Crusades, it became associated with the Orient (Byzantine Empire, Levant and Outremer) and was widely used in Crusader seals and coins.
