Medieval bronze ring with decorated ring band, set with a Roman chalcedony intaglio showing a finely detailed Janus head.
Janus: Roman god of beginnings, gates, transition, duality. Janus presided over the beginning and ending of a conflict, and hence over war and peace. He is usually depicted as a double-faced head, one face looking forwards and the other looking backwards.
Outside diameter: ± 21,2 mm
Inside diameter: ± 16,9 - 15,4 mm
Condition: very fine condition and wearable, high quality intaglio with very fine details. Signs of wear consistent with age and use, small opening in the closed back setting of the ring.
