98/100 Robert Parker: "The older vintages of the special cuvée Castillo de Ygay spent a long time in wood, and the 1917 Castillo Ygay Reserva Especial must be a record, as it was bottled in July 1963 (that's 46 years after the harvest!). Their records say the time was spent as follows: seven months in tank, 541 months in American oak barrels, the first four years in fairly new barrels and the rest in what they usually describe as "traditional old, tartrate-encrusted American barrels." There is a varietal breakdown of 52% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha Tinta, 16% Mazuelo and 12% Graciano with 13.1% alcohol, 7.4 grams of acidity (tartaric) and 0.8 grams of volatile acidity. Their records consider 1917 a very good vintage, with annual rainfall of 345 liters. This is a little darker and with a riper feeling, and it has notes of shoe polish, leather and cigar box, old furniture and some iodine—a darker nose, with earthy hints, truffle, forest floor and compost/organic soils. With time in the glass, it developed a note of tomato vine, reminiscent of a Bloody Mary. It has incredible structure for a wine that's over 100 years ago; it has power, weight and lots of energy. The oil mills that were mentioned on the label of the 1904 were not mentioned here anymore. ... It was released in 1972. There was also a white from 1917 that was released in 1948. The bottle was recorked, but the year could not be read on the cork".
