This is a senso-e (war picture) triptych by Utagawa Kokunimasa which depicts 'Japan's Great Victory at Pyongyang in Chōsen’, which took place during the Sino-Japanese war (1894-1895). Kokunimasa was the eldest son of Kunisada III, who himself was one of the unrecognized last masters of the Meiji era woodblock print.

On the battle of Pyongyang:
“Before dawn on the 15 September 1894 the Japanese army surrounded Pyongyang, where the Chinese troops were concentrated, and launched an all-out attack. This was the first large-scale land engagement of the Sino-Japanese War. On the evening of the same day the Chinese forces surrendered and escaped the city.”
TECHNIQUES:
Excellent colours and use of shomen-zuri (正面摺, "front-printing") to render the soldiers' uniforms shiny. Nice bokashi in the sky. All of these elements make for a higher-quality war print.
Condition: Good condition. Panels are connected. Minor creasing.
Your shipment: Between sturdy pieces of cardboard to avoid damage. Piece will be shipped unfolded in a longer box. Track and Trace and additional coverage (if bidding price permits).
