John Murray - A Handbook for Travellers in Switzerland, and the Alps of Savoy and Piedmont - 1846

A Handbook for Travellers in Switzerland, and the Alps of Savoy and Piedmont. Third edition, corrected and augmented. London, Paris 1846. pp.lxxii.420, adverts. By John Murray III. Very good condition. Nice original solid binding, no stains on the cover (also no stains in the book), one small tear along upper spine edge - see detailed photos - these are part of description. Pages 118, 119 a bit dirty - also caught on photos. All other pages in excellent condition. Outstanding very well preserved book. Very early edition of Murray Switzerland - well preserved and in original binding. COMPLET. The book includes all the pages, 1 map of Switzerland and two panoramas. Map of Switzerland in back is a bit torn (caught on photo). This map is on fine canvas - not on paper - This is peculiarity of very old editions of Murray handbooks for travellers. Immerse yourself in the time when there was only one railway line in Switzerland: from Strassburg to Basel in Switzerland and other railways did not yet exist - a large number of Swiss railway and road tunnels and galleries had not yet been built. The first purely Swiss railway line was built a year later - in 1847 - between Zürich and Baden. Also Savoy was not part of France as it is today, but of kingdom of Sardinia. It was ceded to France in 1860 as reward for help in wars against Austria which in 1861 led to united Italy. Some alpine peaks were still not conquered at this time, e.g. the Matterhorn was considered an unconquerable mountain. It was climbed for the first time only in 1865 and the ascent was not without victims.
