Paravent Byōbu - Feuille d'argent, Bois laqué, Soie - Japon - Première moitié du XIXe siècle (fin de la période Edo)

An amazing, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) displaying a tranquil Kanô School-style painting on oxidized silver leaf, capturing a floral landscape at the bank of a meandering river. The artwork beautifully showcases a cluster of dark blue irises 花菖蒲 (hanashôbu) around some rocks. Adjacent to this, a tall, slender blue wisteria 藤 (fuji) gracefully arches over the landscape, forming an elegant canopy over a young cherry blossom 桜 (sakura) that is just beginning to bloom. Nearby, vibrant pink and red peonies 牡丹 (botan) add a burst of colour to the scene riverside setting. Period: Japan – the painting first half 19th century (Late Edo period). Reframed at a later date, the original painting is mounted on a silver leaf ground. This was probably done during the Meiji period (1868-1912). The painting rendered in watercolour and ink on oxidized silver leaf. Silver leaf continuously undergoes the process of oxidation, which creates a beautiful aged patina. The screen is bordered by two brocade silk trims – a slender écru one and a broader dark brown one, and is encased in a black lacquered wooden frame with protective hardware with engraved scrolling foliage design and domed knobs shaped like blossoms. Dimensions: Total width: 383 cm (2 x 65.3 cm and 4 x 63.1 cm); Height: 176.3 cm. Considering its age, which is approx. 170-224 years old (and maybe even older), it is in a good condition with traces of wear conform age, and old restorations. Please have a close look at photos to have a clear impression of the condition. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
