Parchemin magique - Amhara - Éthiopie
A beautiful "magic scroll', used as a protective charm in the Koptic Orthodox Church of Ethiopia. These scrolls, for which bands of parchment were used ,were individually produced for a specific person, seeking religious protection.
The bands were stitched together making a very long band of religious texts. The texts are exerpts of Biblical texts, written in the religious language of Ge`ez. To embellish these texts, religious drawings in a primitive style were added; in this case of stylised angels and a symbolic sun, representing the divine presence.
To make bearing possible a leather pouch was used, in which the scroll was rolled.
This scroll was collected in the holy city of Lalibela in Central-Ethiopia, in the 1990`s.
