Luristan Bronze Tête de hache
A fine Luristan cast bronze axe head featuring a broad triangular shaft-hole. The blade flares out towards the sharpened convex edge. There is an attractive patination over the surface, two larger chips towards the edge of the blade and a few minor flakes over the body.
Luristan bronzes come from the province of Lorestan, located in modern day Iran. Luristan weapons, such as this nice example, would have been used in everyday life but also buried together with the deceased.
Excavated items from this region often include weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Ornamental objects are also frequently found, such as pins and bracelets. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Luristan bronze objects often serverd ceremonial functions given their funerary contexts. Weapons, such as this nice example, would have been used in everyday life but also buried together with the deceased.
