Wilbur Wright, Orville Wright - Some Aeronautical Experiments. The Wright Brothers' First Publication on Aeronautics - 1903

Entire volume, Annual Report Of The Board Of Regents Of The Smithsonian Institution For The Year Ended June 30 1902, in green publisher's cloth with gilt titles at spine, light to moderate general wear, front inner hinge reinforced, old ink signature noted at front fly. Article is 16-pages, illustrated with 2 full-page plates, printed on both sides, showing a total of 8 photographs, plus two diagrams. Wilbur Wright's landmark report on his and Orville's experiments with gliders which directly led to the first flights at Kitty Hawk in 1903. The report appeared originally in the Journal of Western Society of Engineers, 1901, after the author's presentation at the meeting of September 18, 1901. This was the Wright brothers' first publication on aeronautics. Wilbur would revise the report for publication in the present volume; with an introduction by Octave Chanute. Plus the Wright Brothers' title, The Wright Brothers' Aeroplane, from Century Magazine, September, 1908, 10pp, illustrated with photographs provided by the author of their experiments at Kill Devil Hill, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Very scarce, important pieces of aviation history. From Chanute's introduction, "I had the honor of telling you, some four or five years ago, something about the progress that had been made up to that time. Since then further advances have been made by two gentlemen from Dayton, Ohio -- Mr. Wilbur Wright and Mr. Orville Wright -- who tried some very interesting experiments in October, 1900. These experiments were conducted on the seashore of North Carolina, and were again resumed last July. These gentlemen have been bold enough to attempt some things which neither Lilienthal, nor Pilcher, nor myself dared to do. They have used surfaces very much greater in extent than those which hitherto had been deemed safe, and they have accomplished very remarkable results, part of which it was my privilege to see on a visit which I made to their camp about a month ago. I thought it would be interesting to the members of this society to be the first to learn of the results accomplished, and therefore I have the honor of presenting to you Mr. Wilbur Wright," and from the Editor of Century, "The article which follows is the first popular account of their experiments prepared by the inventors." Very scarce.
