Arkadiy Kurta (1977) - 'Castaway' (2015)

Arkadiy Kurta grew up in the small city of Sumy in Ukraine and lived in Germany for two years while he attended school. Prior to becoming a photographer, he attended the Banking Academy of Finance in Kiev for six years. Whilst studying at the academy he became interested in photography after he was presented with an inexpensive camera as a gift. The following year, at twenty-nine years old, he enrolled in the Kiev School of Photography and a year later he opened his first studio in his hometown. In 2017 he was inducted into The National Union of Photographic Artists of Ukraine. From the magisterial landscapes of Ansel Adams and the haunting portraits of Diane Arbus to the contemporary photographers of the present day, black and white photography continues to make an indelible mark on the art world. Its ability to transcend time and evoke a sense of nostalgia is unparalleled, making it a medium that remains relevant and captivating. Arkadiy Kurta's masterful photographs are the natural heirs to this laudable tradition.
