Poupées samouraï 武者人形 (Musha ningyô) - Pâte Gofun, Brocart de soie, Cheveux, Métal doré - Japon - Fin de la période Edo (première moitié du XIXe siècle)

Set of two large-scale antique antique samurai dolls 武者人形 (Musha ningyô) features nobly portrayed figures from the samurai class. The centerpiece doll represents the legendary samurai Minamoto no Yoshitsune 源義経 (1159-1189), renowned for his martial prowess. Seated on a shôgi 床几 (traditional samurai folding stool), he dons a richly detailed gold and silver yoroi (armor) over a navy blue kimono adorned with scrolling vine motifs. His helmet (kabuto) features an elaborate maedate (decorative front piece) depicting a dragon, a crescent moon, and a sun amidst clouds, with a matching dragon crest on the front of his armor. He also holds a signal baton (saihai). Yoshitsune’s features are meticulously crafted, including eyes inlaid with glass and noble white skin achieved through multiple applications of gofun 胡粉, a fine white pigment made from the powdered shell of the itabo oyster (Ostrea denselamellosa). Accompanying him is a kneeling samurai retainer, dressed in a luxurious silk brocade outfit with red armor elements, though his attire and facial expression are slightly less regal. He wears a black jingasa (soldier's hat). Minamoto no Yoshitsune 源義経 (1159-1189) was a legendary Japanese general of the Minamoto clan during the late Heian period. Celebrated for his strategic brilliance, Yoshitsune was pivotal in the Genpei War, leading his clan to victory against the rival Taira family. His military exploits have immortalized him in Japanese history and culture as the epitome of a heroic figure. Despite his prowess and loyalty, his relationship with his half-brother Yoritomo deteriorated, leading to his tragic and untimely death. Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century). Approx. dimensions Minamoto no Yoshitsune: Height 62 cm, Width 45 cm, Depth 34 cm. Approx. dimensions retainer: Height 34 cm, Width 28 cm, Depth 33 cm. Considering their age, the dolls and the costume are in a very good condition with traces of wear conform age. Wear of the brocade of the retainer’s pants. A few old restorations. Please look at the photos for a condition reference. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
